Just after posting the question I just realized that it was Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Office, and not Windows, but I didn't know how to delete the question. Finally, I had to install Service Pack 1 manually since it didn't do it automatically, but everything is ok now. Again thank you very much for your help and sorry for the inconvenience. All the descriptions and all the reviews don't clarify this. If you install the upgrade version, you must, must install into an existing hard drive with existing operating system.

That said, this is my experience. I changed 3 computers to win 7. Two went well with existing hard drive, xp and vista, and activated. Actually, I had formatted the hard drive with xp, but somehow the installation continued from the system recovery path. One computer, however, I got a new solid state drive and installed this version.

It would not activate, saying the product key was not genuine. I guess the hard drive change triggered MS's genuine product verifier. I did a lot of research before the upgrade, but apparently, not enough. In this case, being a layman with some knowledge did not help. I assumed I was set to install anyway I wanted. Amazon, despite its policy not to refund an opened software, said it would give me a full refund, if Microsoft did not help me.

Microsoft helped me! My past experience with MS not withstanding, the technician from MS checked the validity of the product key and took over my computer to make the product keys valid. I am guessing that MS is willing to support the software where the software is genuine and paid for.

By the way, this version does have genuine product key for 3 installations, if that was not clear. Call me a fool, but I am going to change another hdd to ssd - the vista computer which has win 7 now. Samsung ssd comes with software disk for such a move which I already used once, very easy experience.

I don't expect any trouble, since OS is activated as genuine. I hope this review was clear enough. I certainly went through some confusion. I would recommend changing to win 7 now, at least if you are still on xp. Go to Microsoft website for help with upgrading to win 7. I am avoiding win 8, especially as I don't want to use an operating system built for mobile phones. I would recommend Amazon to be very clear about its description of this product. I would recommend Amazon to be prepared for the flood of customer calls when xp support does end and people start panicking.

The product itself works and is supported. The Amazon was helpful and supportive. The seller, I think, must also change the description to avoid confusion. Reveled through the days of WinXP what a great product and lamented when Vista was released - thinking I would be stuck with XP for life at the current rate.

Thankfully, MS came up with Win7. This product blows all previous versions of Windows out of the water. Whether you are a home user or a professional in the industry - Win7 has likely made your job easier and more efficient. MS has made a fairly stable product this time around and should be happy that their product has made such an impact on the PC world.

Software is easier to install Vista was a nightmare. Protection is higher and more integrated to ensure the system is kept patched - helping to alleviate problems from previous versions of Windows, where older systems basically became playgrounds for viruses and hackers alike - using them for nefarious reasons. Honestly - Apple has figured this out and has been providing upgrades to their OS for almost nothing, realizing that a happy user is a loyal user.

Keep them loyal to your product and they'll keep coming back to buy time and time again.
